Building consents and resource consents – what’s the difference?

Many people are confused over the difference between these two types of consent and become frustrated when they apply for building consent only to be told they also need resource consent. A building consent ensures that your proposed building adheres to the Building Code.  A resource consent ensures that your proposed land use will not adversely affect the surrounding environment and neighbouring properties.

Types of resource consent

The first type of resource consent is land use which is concerned with things like:
